Sanford Airport Solar Project

Sanford Airport solar was connected to the grid in December 2020.  It stands as the largest solar project in Maine, and the largest solar array on an airport in the world!  The solar output is strong enough to power 20,000 homes.  Our community benefits from this project in several ways:

  • Lease revenues to the City of Sanford for land leased will enable the Airport to become financially self-sufficient;
  • New private property value will generate annual tax revenues to the City of Sanford of $500,000 per year;
  • A contract for ground maintenance will provide additional revenues to the Airport over the life of the Project;
  • Completion of the fence around the Airport allows for an enhanced level of safety and security;
  • New construction jobs and permanent positions have added to the local economy while strengthening opportunities for the solar workforce in Maine;
  • Partnership and educational opportunities with the Sanford Regional Technical Center.

This project is a collaboration between the City of Sanford, The Sanford Seacoast Regional Airport, The Industrial Development Corporation of Sanford, NextEra Energy Resources, ISO New England, and CMP.
