Unitil Natural Gas

Unitil, the largest natural gas provider in Maine, is expanding its natural gas service into downtown Sanford and beyond. Thanks to an innovative new program launched in 2018 – Targeted Area Buildout (TAB) – approximately 1,000 new homes and businesses in Sanford now have access to natural gas for the first time. Approximately 15 miles of new gas main has been installed, concluding in 2020.

The expansion area includes Main Street from the new Sanford High School up to the location of the existing middle school and former high school. The service has also extended over the Mousam River and up to Southern Maine Health Care on June and Cottage Street, and into Sanford’s “Westside Village”.  If you are considering natural gas, please call Unitil direct, at (207) 541-2536 for conversion opportunities.

“Unitil’s unique TAB business model to extend services to otherwise unserved areas are to be commended…I would like to recognize Until as a partner in our City’s economic future,” Sanford’s City Manager, Steve Buck.

Unitil Expansion

August 2020 Update – Unitil has installed natural gas pipelines to all the streets in the “Westside Village” where a rebuild of the streets is needed. See map on right. This rebuild and infrastructure investment will fix dangerous intersections, rebuild sidewalks, fix storm drainage, and more, with an anticipated completion date of 2021.  Unitil would like to remind residents that once the streets are complete and paved there is a 5-year moratorium to any digging.   If you are thinking of connecting to natural gas at your property, you will want to take advantage of connecting while this work is going on.  Those interested in finding out more may contact Kelly Fowler from Unitil directly at (207) 541-2505.
