Sanford has an incredible range of recreational possibilities.  Water lovers come to Sanford because of its proximity to more than a dozen lakes. With public boat launches available at many lakes, including Mousam, Wilson, and Great East lakes, Sanford residents can be on the open water within minutes of leaving home.  Don’t miss the Maine Attraction Water Ski Show Team http://www.maineattractionwaterski.com/index.html. Maine Attraction is the only water ski show team in Maine. As a family-oriented organization, the team has been performing unique, entertaining, and skilled water ski shows for over 20 years.  Starting in July, the team performs choreographed themed programs on Thursday evenings on Number One Pond in the middle of downtown Sanford free of charge!

Here’s a quick list of what else you’ll find in Sanford:

  • The beautiful Sanford Country Club.  A semi-private club, with 4 sets of tees ranging from 4900 to 6700 yards.  A robust golf education program and also a spectacular wedding venue.
  • About a dozen public hiking and mountain biking trails through old forests and along the Mousam River, in Sanford and its Village of Springvale.  Hiking at Bauneg Beg Mountain is just 15 minutes from downtown.
  • Cross country skiing on public trails and at cross-country centers in Sanford crossing over into neighboring towns.
  • For baseball fans, there’s a rare treat. Sanford is home to the Sanford Mainers, a member of the prestigious New England College Baseball League, made up of some of the best collegiate players in the country. The historic stadium at Goodall Park provides a perfect venue for residents and summer visitors to enjoy America’s pastime all summer long.

For families, Sundays in Sanford mean trips to the local parks, including gems such as Gowen Park and Holdsworth Park. Holdsworth Park in Springvale includes a swimming area along the pristine Mousam River. Families come here to cook out, play softball, soak up the sun and enjoy the river. A lifeguard is on duty in the summer.

The city’s recreation department and the Sanford-Springvale citizens have developed one of the most extensive and scenic trail systems in Maine, connecting neighborhoods, natural areas, the Mousam River and the downtowns of Sanford and Springvale.  There are trails for all abilities; rugged footpaths, paved bike paths, historic walks, multi-purpose trails and a boardwalk. All trails are FREE to use for the public. For more information, please go to sanfordrec.com.
